Brief Report on the Climate Change Committee (CCC) to the NCC 12-04-10

This report is a brief update on the CCC committee since the last full report on 8/1/10 and the brief summary presentation on the proposed use of the “10 page” report on the prevention of Catastrophic Climate Change (C3) as a basis for a position and program on C3 by CCDS.

Summary:

1.       “Prevent Catastrophic Climate Change” a 3 fold, 2 page leaflet was prepared by the CCC and adopted by CCDS.

2.       A 10 page version of “Climate Change: An Unprecedented Challenge and Opportunity” was prepared by members of the CCC and submitted at the NCC on 8/1/10.

3.       A brief proposal supporting the use of the 10 page paper as a basis for a climate change position and program was presented to the NEC on 9//8/10.

4.       Due to family medical needs and lack of sufficient support from the CCC or CCDS, Walter Teague resigns from the chair of the CCC.

5.       All documents of the CCC can be found on-line at the links below.

Details:

1.            Based on resolutions passed by CCDS and the work of the CCC, we were able to produce a brief, summary leaflet describing our common agreements on C3. This leaflet presents only the barest elements of positions and programs. It was distributed at the US Social Forum and elsewhere by the DC CCDS chapter.

2.            The 10 page more detailed exposition on C3 grew out of an earlier 8 page paper that was prepared and distributed by the DC CCDS chapter. At the April NCC, the 8 pager was referred to the NEC, but no action was taken. At the 8/1/10 NCC, this longer version was proposed as a basis for a position and program on C3 by CCDS. It was again referred to the NEC for consideration. This time, a date for consideration was set.

3.            At the NEC on 9/8/10, I presented a 5 minute summary explaining and supporting the use of the 10 page “Climate Change: An Unprecedented Challenge and Opportunity.” I am not sure what happened with this proposal since then.

4.            Since early August, family medical needs have required most of my time. How long this will continue is unknown. Therefore at present, I do not have time to devote to CCC or CCDS work. Further, the continuing disagreements and some hostility to my primary proposals on how CCDS should address climate change and C3 make it clear that I can not now usefully function as either chair or participant in the CCC or general climate change discussion and work of CCDS. I therefore resign as chair and hope that someone else can take on and continue this task. I continue to feel it is increasingly important that CCDS should have a strong position and strategic approach to climate change and C3 in particular, and regret that I was not more helpful in this matter.

5.            All of the mentioned documents and more are posted on the www.redandgreen.org web site. The CCC, committee documents and papers are kept in a semi-private directory at www.redandgreen.org/CCC . Anyone can go there if they know to add “CCC” but there are no obvious links to it on our site.
