JANUARY 20 COUNTER-INAUGURAL DEMONSTRATION IN DC GAINS MOMENTUM

DOES YOUR GROUP WANT TO BE LISTED AS AN ENDORSER?

Hundreds of organizations and prominent individuals are signing on as endorsers for a demonstration timed to coincide with the January 20 presidential inauguration.  Thousands of people will converge on Washington DC to demand “Stop the death machine!”  Their protest will be in opposition to the U.S.  death penalty and demand freedom for Mumia Abu-Jamal.  The “death machine” impacts on poor people at home and abroad.  Thus, the demonstration will also highlight the growing resistance to the human and ecological catastrophe caused by Globalization.

CALL TO ACTION

At this moment, George W. Bush has been certified the winner of Florida’s 25 electoral votes.  He has announced that he is assembling a transition team to assume the office.  George W. Bush is the personification of the death machine.  He has presided over more executions than any other governor in U.S. history.  But even if Al Gore were to take the office, the death machine would continue without pause.

How will January 20, 2001, be remembered in history?  As Day One of a new period of racist reaction? That is up to us.  Will we sit by quietly while the media covers all the pomp and glitter of the inauguration?

WHY WE ARE PROTESTING THE DEATH MACHINE

More than 2 million people will observe Dr. Martin Luther King’s birthday (Jan. 15) in U.S. prisons.  4,000 of these people— including Mumia Abu-Jamal—await execution on death row.  Leonard Peltier has not been granted clemency.

The war against the poor at home is only the domestic component of globalization’s worldwide assault against poor people around the world.  Corporate profits come at the expense of human needs and the security of the global environment.  Health care, education, housing are subject to IMF-imposed austerity.  If the poor rebel, their protest is to be met by bombs and bullets.

The Pentagon functions as the military gendarme for corporate globalization.  From Colombia to Palestine, it is U.S.  bombs, missiles and bullets that kill the people.

We know from history that all the achievements in civil rights, workers’ rights, women’s rights, lesbian/gay/bi/trans rights come from the struggle of the people.

January 20, 2001, must be remembered not as the coronation of Gov. “Death” (or of Al Gore) but as a historic landmark in the struggle against the racist death penalty and the anti-human death machine of modern corporate globalization.
